Frosty Fridge!
Is Your Refrigerator Frosty? You bought a frost-free refrigerator expecting that it would be free of frost, right? Often even with a frost-free refrigerator, frost forms on food packages in the freezer and water drops accumulate in the fresh food section of the refrigerator.
If you live in a hot or humid climate, having your refrigerator door open will cause frost to form in the freezer. However, the moisture in your fridge could be from the new energy efficient defrost heater that has a shorter run time. The following suggestions may help you reduce this problem:
- If you have an air conditioner, use it to reduce humidity.
- Make sure air can circulate through your refrigerator by rearranging the shelves.
- Don't overload or underload the freezer. It should be at least half full.
- Check your manual and make sure the controls are set as recommended. There may be different settings suggested for summer and winter.
- Make sure all liquids and moisture rich foods are properly sealed to prevent evaporation.
- Open the refrigerator and freezer doors as few times as possible.
- Follow procedures outlined in the user's manual for cleaning the condenser coils. Be sure to do it at least twice a year. This procedure will also help you save energy, too.
- Cover pots and pans and use the range hood fan when cooking to reduce moisture in the kitchen.
- Make sure your refrigerator door has a good tight seal.
