Window Energy Treatments can Save Money
Window treatments have proven effective in combating the loss of energy through windows. Experts estimate that 20 to 30 percent of the heat escapes through the windows in winter, and a similar amount soaks back in through the windows in summer. Many homeowners would like to know how they can save on energy bills and decorate their windows at the same time.
For energy conservation, lined draperies are recommended. Tests show significant differences between unlined and lined drapery samples in their ability to resist heat flow. In addition, a lining will protect carpets and upholstery from the sun's rays.
One of the most effective means of creating energy-efficient windows through decorating is by layering treatments. Draperies used in combination with shades create an effective barrier to weather. Heavy fabrics with a tight weave are good.
Such window accessories as cornices, particularly those with closed tops and fabric balances, also help keep in warmth, as do side-sealing drapery devices such as Velcro tape.
Shades can be made more energy-efficient by the use of either magnetic seals or track edge-sealing systems, which provide tighter seals around the windows. Shades are also available with energy efficient backings.
Insulating treatments are especially recommended in north-opening windows and possibly west-opening ones where prevailing winds blow in the winter.
The use factor is an important consideration when dealing with energy-efficient window treatments. A homeowner who leaves all the shades on the north windows down 24 hours a day and raises and lowers all other shades daily, will save more than a homeowner who leaves all shades open every day.
